The word “Pattaya” was originated long time ago. In 1767, while Phraya Tak was the King rulers of Khampaengpetch province aware that the former capital would be captured by the Burmese Invaders, since the troops fighting against they were getting too weak to fight against the invaders. Due to the fact that Phraya Tak decided to escape from Wat Pichai camp forwarded to southeast and fight against Burmese Invaders that the lasted 4 times. Then the troop forwarded in advance to Chonburi Province. The Khampaengpetch King took his troops taking rest along the Wat Yai Intraram and moved the troops forwarded to Chanthaburi Province. Between the ways of the troops, they rested at Ban Nong Pai which is located in the Pattaya Provincial Police Station (at present), along Sukhumvit Road, Na Klua, Banglamong, Royal chronicle, Royal writings, Book to mentioned that “Nai Klom was gathering his troops to intercept.
After the Phraya Tak rode his elephant holding with gun trigger to swap with his private surrounded over the troops of Nai Klom. This was awed by dignified manner and surrendered without a fight. Then the troops rested at the Nongnam.
The next day, fall on Tuesday, 6th day of the waning moon, second lunar noon, Nai Klom brought his one thousand troops to rested in one district for one night The next day the troops approaching Jomtien Beach and Tung Kaitiya, Sattahip and stay overnight each place. Then the next district natives which is called “Thap Phraya” then later changed to Phatthaya” containing the word T. means army and T. Flag. Since considering that the place where Phraya Tak camped was a good site, with seabrace, the names of wind were called Phatthaya were the wind from the southwest to the northeast the beginning of rainy season.
For decades, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand’s premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors.
Pattaya’s popularity grew so rapidly that the local government couldn’t cope with its administration. So in the 1976 Pattaya and nearby Naklua became one administrative district. Then in 1978 Pattaya was declared a city in its own right.
Nowadays, Pattaya integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort in Thailand, city-like dining, shopping and night life entertainment facilities with more than 500 hotels, thousands of shopping center, restaurants and bars.
In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart and Thai-boxing gear. Pattaya offers a broad range of things to do. During the day, one may enjoy riding elephants or driving humble automatic mini-bikes, ATV, or even monster multicolored convertible Jeeps. Others go for shooting firearms, scuba diving and surfing, deep-sea fishing, jet-ski, scooters, water-skiing, parasailing, or aerial sports such as flying motor-propelled gliders.
On the other hand, in the night time, there are restaurants, bars, theaters, cabaret shows, night clubs, bowling halls, billiard & snooker clubs, discos, sauna & massage parlors, not to cite its absolutely incredible shopping which is available non-stop both day and night.

Notorious for its thriving sex industry, Pattaya has long attracted those in search of a good time. We’ve all seen the t-shirts claiming ‘good guys go to heaven and bad guys go to Pattaya’, but what is it that attracts so many members of the gay community to this commercialised beach resort? The answer is, of course, Pattaya’s naughty nightlife.
Pattaya has cashed in on the gay scene in recent years with numerous bars catering to a gay clientele, not to mention the enormously popular cabaret shows performed by kathoey, transwomen who are also commonly referred to as ladyboys. These unique performances add a touch of Moulin Rouge to the otherwise largely unglamorous resort and make for a memorable spectacle for the many gay men who come here specifically for the ladyboys.
First-time gay and lesbian visitors are often overwhelmed by Pattaya nightlife and its large area devoted solely to gay entertainment – Pattayaland soi 3. Lined with male go-go bars and nightclubs packing in a largely western crowd, the neon-lit district attracts equal numbers of curious tourists and punters looking to pay for sexual services.
Each bar has a number of staff at the entrance whose job it is to attract customers. In addition, the streets are lined with ‘freelancers’ whose presence multiplies by the end of the evening. Men and women walking around Pattayaland at night, also known as Boyz Town, should be ready to encounter friendly yet persistent representatives of the gay venues.
As with girlie bars in Thailand, inside Pattaya gay bars foreigners are made to feel welcome by staff that readily spark up friendly conversation with customers. The male-oriented gay bars are run by mainly young Thai guys whose feminine and petite nature often appeal to western tastes. Customers at these bars are under no obligation to do anything more than have a drink, but if they do like the look of one of the boys working, it is easy enough to agree on a price for any additional services.
Popular favourite Pattaya gay bars on Pattayaland soi 3 are Boyz Boyz Boyz, attracting both foreigners and locals with its dance floor and nightly shows, and the Throb/Splash nightclub opposite Le Café Royal, a popular ‘gay’ hotel. For happy hour, head for Panorama, a large and lively gay bar in the heart of the Boyz Town district.
“I’m amazed at how relaxed the atmosphere is in many of Pattayland’s gay bars”, says Hank, a first-time gay visitor from the Netherlands. “Of course, you have your regular pick-up joints, but many of the bars here offer more than just friendly guys”, he adds.
Not all gay visitors to Pattaya come here from the sex industry mind you, with many enjoying the cabaret shows and go-go bar performances along with their partners. The popular cabaret shows in Pattaya such as Alcazar and Tiffany’s are a hit with all types of visitors and are highly rated for their ornately costumed and often bear-breasted kathoey dancers.
The lesbian scene is more discreet, with a lack of venues devoted to women looking for women. Nevertheless, most of the bars welcome lesbians and there are many prostitutes who are happy to service women. Just like men, lesbian women can enjoy the go-go bars though they should expect to be in the minority. Thai tom girls, or dee, mostly take on a male appearance and can also be found in many of the regular, heterosexual bars and clubs around town.
Megan, a 30-year-old lesbian from Brisbane says the lesbian scene in Pattaya is healthy enough. “Anyone can walk into any bar and watch one of the shows or enjoy the company of the pretty Thai girls”, she says. “Many of the girls at the bars prefer the company of a farang female”, she adds.
There is however inevitably a seedy side to Pattaya’s gay and lesbian scene, with many gay tourists rejecting the entertainment on offer here. Even worse, a fare share of tourists end up getting ripped off while enjoying the bar scene. The Pattaya authorities have tried to clean up and contain the entertainment areas in recent years with some success, but as with all sex industry hubs, Pattayaland has its downsides.
Despite its controversial nature, the raunchy nightlife scene on offer in Pattaya remains a melting pot for gay and lesbian visitors, and a good income earner for the many gay and straight Thais who work the scene.

British entertainment writer Andy Burrows knows the booming town of Pattaya inside out. He suggests the following professional sites; Up-to-date Pattaya tourist guide and Pattaya nightlife

Pattaya is located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand approximately 150km from Bangkok and 125km Bangkok’s international airport. Travel time from the airport is one and a half hours. The road is good now that roadworks are nearly completed.

Pattaya was a small fishing village until US serviceman began arriving on R&R breaks from the Vietnam War via the nearby U-Tapao airport. With their arrival the bar scene that is present today began to develop.

Pattaya ladies come in all shapes and personalities. You are sure to find one (every night) to your liking.

Pattaya ladies go either long time (LT) or short time (ST. ) This basically refers to the length of time that she goes with you for.

Typically ST is about one or two hours. It is more or less equivalent to what you would get from the working girls at home. In this time you can cum once or twice or maybe more if you are lucky. If you are in a ST bar they will have rooms available for this purpose. If elsewhere you will need to go back to your hotel with her or find a ST room at further expense to you.

Long time is typically over-night. Some ladies may leave as early as 7am (which is not good service) or mid-afternoon. Some are very difficult to get rid of at all!! Early afternoon is about the normal time if the lady you have taken is fair.

Some people like only ST and some only LT but most do both. Many guys will have a ST during the day and then take a LT that night. What you do is up to you.

A variation on the LT is the girl friend experience (GFE. ) This is LT taken to the extreme. Where LT ends and GFE starts is open to debate. You’ll know when you are in a GFE when you are with her for 24 hours every day (or near to it) and she has a stash of clothes and other things in your room.

There is nothing wrong with GFE and it has benefits. However it has its dangers as you and/or her may become too attached. If you don’t want this implement the ‘3 day rule. ’

Pattaya ladies usually come from a poor rural family with a sense of obligation to provide for their families. They come to Pattaya after hearing stories of ladies coming and making lots of money. They also have heard about how ladies come and meet a rich farang to look after them and their family. Most come with the idea of marrying a nice man to release them from their obligations that are placed on them by their family.

Unfortunately the reality of Pattaya is rather different. Perhaps they meet a man that they think is good. He promises her many great and grand things. He goes home with the promise of coming back to marry her but she never hears from him again. Perhaps she hears and sees similar things from the ladies that she is working with.

The result of this is that many ladies quickly take the view that farang men are theirs to take as much money from as possible. This will suit guys who only go to Pattaya for a couple of weeks. They can just go and have fun and not have to worry too much about attachments. However, this situation is full of traps for those who are unaware of the situation. Don’t be one of those guys!

There is no doubt some good ladies in Pattaya but being a newbie don’t go there looking for one. The sharks are just waiting for you and they are good at what they do.

The main Pattaya entertainment area is contained in an area starting at Walking Street in the south and extending about 3km north to Soi 2. The area extends back from the beach approximately 400m.

What follows is a brief description of the various bar areas found in Pattaya. It is no means comprehensive. Bars can be found anywhere in the area but these areas contain a high concentration of bars and many visitors group them together in a similar fashion due to their different character.

We’ll start in the north and progress south. Click on the map for a larger image.

Soi 2 and 3 Area

This area is dominated by open beer bars in complexes. In the area you will find the well known soapy massage parlours. There is one gogo bar and one coyote bar. Most of the action in the area is concentrated at the Second Road end of the sois and along that road.

Soi 6

Soi 6 is a unique place. This place is infamous for it short time bars and debauched behaviour. A trip to Soi 6 is a must on any visit to Pattaya.

The area contains mostly closed air-conditioned bars. There are some bars that have open areas and some have some gogo elements to them. There are also some normal pubs. The vast majority of the bars have rooms upstairs for short time engagements.

Beware that visiting this soi for the first time is very intimidating for a lot of guys. You are unlikely to experience anything else like it. It would be a good idea to meet someone to show you around.

Sois 7 and 8

On the south side of Central Road are Sois 7 and 8.

Like the soi 2 and 3 areas this area is dominated by open beer bars. There are a number of gogo bars and some larger bars. The bars extend along the whole length of both sois and onto both Beach and Second Roads.

The Soi 13s

This area comprises Sois 13, 13/1 and 13/2. Soi 13/1 is commonly known as Soi Yamato and Soi 13/2 Soi Post Office respectively.

This area contains a mixture of open air bars, closed air-conditioned bars and small gogo bars. Some of the bars are short time bars with rooms available should the need arise.

Pattayaland Sois

Sois 13/3 and 13/4 are known as Pattayaland 1 and 2. This area is dominated by gogo bars with small open-air beers in the mix.

This area is become more and more the domain of the establishments catering to gay visitors. The small L-shaped soi between Pattayaland 2 and Second Road is known as Boyz Town for obvious reasons.

Walking Street

For many people this area is Pattaya. You will see all sorts of people in this area from mum and dad with the two kids to hard-core mongers. You may at times feel like you are a zoo exhibit.

The main entertainment area on Walking Street extends for about 500m. On it you will find many gogo bars, open-air bars, pubs and discos. Some bars have live music while some are like those in the Soi 7 and 8 area. Prices are generally a bit higher here to compensate for higher rents.

Off Walking Street there are many sois to explore. Some of Pattaya best gogo bars are located on these sois so make sure you explore. In fact the bars make it easy for you as you will find people promoting the establishments at the corner of their soi and Walking Street.

No matter what your preferences Walking Street is a must do on a first trip. However, don’t get stuck there as it may be the heart of Pattaya but there is more soul elsewhere.

Soi Buakhoa and Soi Diana Inn

A little bit out of the way is the area along Soi Diana Inn and onto Soi Buakhoa. The area contains many open air bars, a few gogo bars and a newly opened coyote bar. The L-shaped soi between these 2 sois (Soi LK Metro) is also worth exploring.

The area is fairly laid back and has somewhat of a different feel to it. In recent times it is getting busier all the time. There are a few good hotels in the area which make it a great place to stay if you want to be a little off the beaten track.

Other Areas

There are areas outside of central Pattaya worth exploring at some stage. These include Naklua to the north, East Pattaya and Jomtien. For a first visit there is more than enough to keep you occupied in Central Pattaya. It is probably best to leave these areas to later trips.

If you would like more information on Pattaya you can try Pattaya Newbie. It contains a lot of information on Pattaya bars, Pattaya ladies and other general information.
